Easter Learning Activities:

1. Dye and decorate Easter eggs: a fun Easter activity

If you’re looking for an easy and fun idea to keep the learning going during Easter break with your kids, why not try making hard-boiled eggs for dye and decoration? Not only is this a great way to get some practice in the kitchen, but it’s also a fun activity that the whole family can get involved in.

Materials

  • Eggs (The average are 8 eggs per kid, but is up to you. Decorate as many as you want!)
  • Water
  • White vinegar
  • Food coloring
  • Paper towel
  • Clear glasses
  • egg carton (empty)
  • Paints or pen

Step 1: Hardboil the Easter eggs

  • Put the eggs (as many as you like) in a pot with enough water to cover them.
  • Make sure about an inch of water is covering the top of the egg.
  • Bring the water to a boil, then remove from the heat, cover, and set aside for 13-16 minutes.
  • Drain the pot and run cold water over the eggs to cool them down.

Step 2: Dye preparation

  •  It’s easy to make your own dye to decorate Easter eggs.
  • Simply mix a teaspoon of white vinegar with 1/2 cup of hot water.
  • As a general rule 20 drops of desired food coloring should be added.
  • Place it in a clear glass container and allow it to cool (you’ll need one for each color egg you plan to mix.).

Step 3: Dye the Easter eggs

  •  Submerge the egg in the container with the mix.
  • Let the egg sit in the dye for about 10 minutes on average. The intensity of the color depends on how long the egg remains submerged in the container with the dye.
  • Use a spoon to dip the egg in, making sure the color is even.

An important tip that I would like to share with you is that you can create a variety of colors by blending three food colorings: red, blue, and yellow.

Primary ColorsBlendingSecondary Colors
Yellow Yellow and blue=Green
BlueBlue and red=Purple
RedRed and yellow=Orange

Step 4: Dry the Easter eggs

  • Remove the egg from the container with the food coloring and place it on top of a paper towel.
  • After the egg is dry on top, flip it so the bottom can dry.

Step 5: Decorate and display

  • Draw whatever you like on the easter egg (balls, faces, patterns, stripes…). You can be as creative as you want!
  • Once you’re finished, let the paint or ink dry. And that’s it!
  • Keep them in the fridge until you’re ready to use them.

This fun Easter activity is a great opportunity to practice numbers, the primary and secondary colors, geometric shapes, states of matter (solid, liquid, gas), and new vocabulary. Also fine motor skills such as pouring liquids and holding a pen. They’ll have so much fun that they won’t even realize they’re learning!

There are many fun and easy ways to incorporate reading into your Easter activities, such as creating an Easter-themed scavenger hunt or even hiding easter eggs with special messages inside.

Get a list of items that start with each letter of the alphabet and have them search for them around the house or yard. This is a great way to work on those all-important skills like letter recognition, phonemic awareness, and even beginning reading skills.

Easter is also a great time to focus on math skills. Have your kids help you with the Easter egg hunt, and have them count how many eggs they find. You can also hide easter plastic eggs in different colors, and have your kids sort them by color. This is a great way to work on those early math skills like sorting, counting, and basic addition and subtraction. (I have written an article about how it is possible to develop mathematical skills through play that I encourage you to read!)

Finally, don’t forget about the importance of the Easter holiday itself. This is a great time to talk to your kids about the meaning of Easter and why we celebrate it. You can also incorporate some fun crafts and activities into your Easter celebration that will help your kids learn more about the holiday.

3. Read and learn together with Easter-themed books
